Why the Monorail Was Shut Down

Operations were halted on September 20, 2025, after multiple technical failures, including mid-journey breakdowns that raised serious safety concerns.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) decided to suspend services entirely rather than continue with patchwork fixes.

This pause allowed authorities to rethink the system from the ground up—focusing on long-term reliability instead of short-term repairs.

What Has Changed: Technology & Safety Upgrades

The monorail is not just restarting—it’s being rebuilt with modern systems. Key upgrades include:

• New rolling stock (train sets) to replace aging rakes
• CBTC-based signalling system for better control and safety
• Fleet refurbishment and system overhaul across operations

Importantly, the upgraded system has already received certification from an independent safety assessor, Bureau Veritas, ensuring it meets required safety standards.

A final clearance from railway safety authorities is expected before full operations resume.

When Will Services Resume?

While an exact date is yet to be officially announced, reports suggest the monorail could return around April–May 2026, once all safety approvals are in place.

Trial runs and testing are currently underway, indicating that the system is in its final readiness phase.

The workshop brought together over 200 participants, including senior government officials, police officers, judiciary representatives, legal professionals, media personnel and civil society organisations, providing a vital platform to deliberate on emerging trends and strengthen coordinated responses to combat human trafficking and bonded labour.

The inaugural session was graced by Sri B. Shivadhar Reddy, IPS, Director General of Police, Telangana, along with Ms. Charu Sinha, IPS, Additional Director General of Police, Women Safety Wing, and Smt. D. Anasuya Seethakka, Hon’ble Minister for Women and Child Welfare.

The workshop featured focused discussions on evolving trends in human trafficking, bonded labour and sex trafficking, recognising bonded labour as a hidden and under-reported form of organised crime. Sessions highlighted the need for stronger deterrence mechanisms, improved enforcement of labour laws, strengthened prosecution systems and enhanced role of Anti-Human Trafficking Units (AHTUs).

Addressing the participants Sri B. Shivadhar Reddy, IPS, Director General of Police, Telangana emphasized that bonded labour is not merely a labour issue but a coercive organised crime, where victims are lured through false promises, trapped in exploitative conditions and often unable to escape without external intervention.

“The State Police should focus on proactive identification of victims, strong investigations, and ensure convictions using modern technology,” said the DGP

Ms. Charu Sinha, IPS, Additional Director General of Police, Women Safety Wing, highlighted that anti-trafficking discourse often overlooks adult bonded labour and stressed three key priorities: recognising debt bondage as a criminal offence, strengthening investigations across the entire chain of exploitation and ensuring a survivor-centric approach focused on dignity and safety.

Bonded labour is not a contract it is coercion. It often overlaps with trafficking offences, where the core issue is not movement, but exploitation through force, fraud, or coercion,” said the ADGP.

Smt. Anita Ramachandran, IAS, Secretary ,Women and Child Development Department, underscored that rescue alone is insufficient without sustainable rehabilitation, noting that lack of support systems often leads victims back into exploitative conditions. The Member Secretary, Telangana State Legal Services Authority, emphasised the judiciary’s role in enforcing constitutional protections and recognising non-payment of minimum wages as a form of forced labour.

Delivering the keynote address, Smt. Seethakka, Hon’ble Minister for Panchayati Raj & Rural Development, Rural Water Supply, Women & Child Welfare, Government of Telangana outlined that while it is important to have laws what is all the more important is to have effective implementation. Combating bonded labour and trafficking requires coordinated action across departments. Seethakka also stressed on the need to treat victims of bonded labour from other states with equal empathy and dignity . She pressed  on the importance of strengthening local livelihoods, Self-Help Groups and community systems to reduce vulnerability to trafficking and bonded labour crimes .

Telangana State Labour Minister Mr. Vivek Venkataswamy said: “Bonded labour is a serious issue that severely undermines human dignity. Its eradication requires a collective effort from the government, civil society organizations (NGOs), and the public. NGOs play a crucial role in identifying victims, creating awareness, and supporting rehabilitation. I appreciate their continued support.

Strengthening awareness at the grassroots level is essential. People must understand their rights and avoid falling into exploitative systems. At the same time, laws must be strictly enforced to ensure justice for victims.

The government is committed to eliminating bonded labour. We are strengthening rescue efforts, rehabilitation programs, housing support, and social security measures. I urge all stakeholders, including NGOs, to work together in building a society free from exploitation.”

The workshop also highlighted the importance of community-level convergence, media engagement, data-driven policy approaches and streamlined rescue and rehabilitation mechanisms.

A defining moment of the workshop was the powerful testimony shared by survivor leader Smt. Shivamma of TRILINGA, underscoring the urgent need for survivor-led interventions and community-based prevention. She also called for the recognition of February 9 as Bonded Labour System Abolition Day in Telangana, to strengthen public awareness and collective action.

The deliberations concluded with a collective emphasis on multi-stakeholder coordination, capacity building and sustained policy engagement, reaffirming Telangana’s commitment to eliminating human trafficking and bonded labour through a comprehensive and collaborative approach.

International Justice Mission (IJM) supported the workshop as a technical partner, bringing in global expertise and field experience in addressing human trafficking and bonded labour. IJM works closely with government systems to strengthen prevention, rescue and prosecution.

The case has shocked the nation, with complaints alleging that the accused worked as a gang, primarily targeting women employees aged between 18 and 25. So far, nine FIRs, including one by a male employee, who has claimed religious harassment and attempted conversion. The complaints include abuse of Hindu deities, forced consumption of non-vegetarian food items, religious harassment and coercion, and pressure to follow specific religious practices, among others.

Eight people have been arrested so far, including seven men – Danish Sheikh, Tausif Attar, Raza Memon, Shahrukh Qureshi, Shafi Sheikh, Asif Aftab Ansar and Shahrukh Sheikh – and one woman.

Police said that some of these accused held higher designations in the company and allegedly misused their roles to harass co-workers. An officer alleged that Nida Khan discouraged a woman employee from filing a complaint, telling her that such “things happen”.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that operations at the unit were temporarily suspended, with employees instructed to work from home until further notice.

However, sources told Business Today that the office remained operational on Thursday, with around 60 employees reporting to work. The office has neither been sealed nor shut, and employees have been given the discretion to work either from home or from the office.

When asked about a rise in sexual harassment complaints in TCS’s annual disclosures since 2021, the sources said that the increase is linked to improvements in internal systems and processes introduced in recent years, particularly measures aimed at creating a safer environment for women employees. These initiatives, they said, have led to greater awareness among employees and a higher likelihood of formally reporting complaints under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) framework.

The sources indicated that the trend reflects growing confidence in grievance redressal mechanisms and better accessibility of reporting channels, rather than a proportional rise in incidents of misconduct.

They added that continued focus on sensitisation programmes and employee training has strengthened the internal reporting ecosystem, enabling employees to raise concerns more comfortably through formal channels.

The move makes Karnataka the first state in the country to make the most definitive announcement on the topic of barring social media use among children. Andhra Pradesh and Goa are two other states to have previously said that they are considering similar moves.

GOVERNMENT HAD BEEN DISCUSSING THE IDEA EARLIER

The idea of regulating children’s access to social media had been under discussion within the Karnataka government for some time.

State IT and Biotechnology Minister Priyank Kharge had told the Assembly earlier this year that the government was examining possible measures to ensure responsible use of artificial intelligence and social media among young users.

Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao had also expressed concerns about the impact of excessive screen exposure on children.

BJP MLA and former minister Suresh Kumar had urged the government to take the issue seriously, warning that unregulated social media exposure could harm both education and family environments.

The Chief Minister had also earlier discussed the issue with university vice chancellors, seeking their views on whether mobile phones should be restricted for children under 16.

GLOBAL DEBATE ON SOCIAL MEDIA RESTRICTIONS

Karnataka’s move comes amid a growing global debate on regulating children’s access to social media.

Several countries have already begun experimenting with restrictions. Australia has introduced strict measures limiting social media access for younger users, while the United Kingdom and Finland have also been discussing similar safeguards.

In parts of Europe, including France and Spain, schools have imposed limits on smartphone use in classrooms to reduce distraction and improve student focus.

These discussions reflect rising global concern over the impact of social media algorithms, screen addiction and online risks on young users.

WHY BANNING SOCIAL MEDIA IS NOT A SIMPLE SOLUTION

However, experts say regulating children’s digital exposure is far more complicated than simply imposing bans.

India’s Economic Survey 2025–26 has already flagged excessive smartphone use among young people as a growing concern, linking it to sleep problems, anxiety, reduced attention spans and academic stress.

But addiction is only one layer of the problem.

Cybersecurity experts warn that children and teenagers often share personal information online without fully understanding privacy risks. Social media platforms, games and apps can collect location data, behavioural patterns, voice samples and browsing habits, creating detailed digital footprints that may later be misused for surveillance, identity theft or targeted manipulation.

Another growing concern is online grooming. Law enforcement agencies across countries have repeatedly warned that predators increasingly use social media, gaming chats and messaging platforms to build trust with minors before exploiting them. Such interactions can continue for months without parents or teachers noticing.

Artificial intelligence has added a new dimension to these risks. AI-powered chatbots and recommendation algorithms can keep children engaged for long periods while also collecting sensitive behavioural data. In some cases, experts say such systems may unintentionally expose minors to harmful content or enable new forms of manipulation.

At the same time, technology is not only a source of risk. For many young people, social media and digital platforms also provide access to learning resources, coding communities, creative opportunities and even early entrepreneurial ventures.

Because of this dual nature, experts say blanket bans may be difficult to enforce and could push young users towards unregulated platforms, virtual private networks (VPNs) or hidden accounts that are harder for parents and authorities to monitor.

Many policymakers are therefore exploring a middle path — combining age-based safeguards, stronger privacy protections, parental controls and digital literacy programmes rather than relying solely on prohibitions.

As Karnataka moves ahead with its proposed restrictions, the debate reflects a wider global challenge: how to protect children online while still allowing them to benefit from the opportunities of the digital world.

Fifteen ED teams swung into action before dawn, conducting searches against persons linked to the power utility firm amid allegations of money laundering.

A source has confirmed the operations focused on premises in Mumbai and Hyderabad, though specific addresses were not disclosed to avoid compromising the probe.

The raids were conducted days after the ED provisionally attached Anil Ambani’s Mumbai residence, ‘Abode’, located in the posh Pali Hill area. The property is valued at Rs 3,716.83 crore.

A day after the attachment, Ambani appeared before the ED on February 26 for a second round of questioning in connection with an alleged bank fraud-linked money-laundering case.

The commitment, unveiled at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi on Friday, will target startups across artificial intelligence, healthcare, defense technology, fintech, and consumer technology. The announcement marks a significant increase from the $500 million to $1 billion the firm had previously earmarked for India.

India, the world’s most populous country with more than a billion internet users, is positioning itself as a major AI investment destination. New Delhi aims to attract over $200 billion in AI infrastructure investments over the next two years as it hosts the India AI Impact Summit with participation from companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google.

“India will build the next generation of global platform companies,” General Catalyst CEO Hemant Taneja (pictured above) said, adding that the firm sees Indian founders as uniquely positioned to develop technology for markets serving enormous populations.

General Catalyst said it sees India’s biggest AI opportunity in large-scale real-world deployment rather than in building so-called frontier models. The firm cited the country’s government-built digital infrastructure, vast domestic market, and deep services talent pool as reasons for that view.

The push comes as India’s AI ambitions accelerate. At the summit, conglomerates Adani Group and Reliance Industries, led by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, announced plans to invest more than $200 billion combined to build AI data center infrastructure in the country. OpenAI has separately partnered with Tata Group’s TCS  one of India’s largest tech companies to develop a 100-megawatt AI data center as part of the expansion of its Stargate infrastructure project. In recent months, global tech companies, including Amazon, Google, and Microsoft have also outlined tens of billions of dollars in cloud and AI investments in the country.

General Catalyst has been building its India portfolio across fast delivery e-commerce, health tech, and deep tech, with investments including Zepto, PB Health, Raphe, Jeh Aerospace, Pronto, and Ayr Energy.

“This investment allows us to operate at a different scale in India,” Neeraj Arora, General Catalyst’s CEO for India, the Middle East, and North Africa, said, adding that the firm aims to support companies from early stage through to the public markets.

General Catalyst said it is developing a framework to accelerate large-scale AI adoption across priority sectors in India, aiming to help convert pilot projects into full deployments. The firm’s General Catalyst Institute has also been working to build government-industry partnerships in the country.

The university, located in Greater Noida, has been mocked relentlessly on social media after Neha Singh, a professor of communications, said in an interview to DD News that a robotic dog that was displayed in the pavilion was developed by the “centre of excellences” (sic) at the institution. It quickly emerged that the robodog, which Singh had called “Orion”, was the Unitree Go2, developed by China’s Unitree Robotics. 

Singh later blamed miscommunication for the entire episode. 

“The controversy happened because things may not have been expressed clearly. I take accountability that perhaps I did not communicate properly, as it was done with a lot of energy and enthusiasm and very quickly, in a jiffy, so I may not have come across as very eloquent, which is a rare case,” she told news agency PTI on Wednesday. 

“Also, the intent may not have been properly understood. One important thing is that the robodog clearly has its branding on top, we have not changed that. So, how can we claim that we manufactured it? I have told everyone that we introduced it to our students to inspire them to create something better on their own,” she said.

Pressed by another reporter on the issue, Singh reiterated that she may have been misinterpreted, saying, “Your six can be my nine.” That last statement took on a life of its own, being used by several social media users to criticise the professor and the university.

The organisers of the Summit asked Galgotias University to clear the pavilion, and it did so.

Asked about the controversy on Wednesday, S Krishnan, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), said the ministry wanted genuine work reflected and a code followed.

“We want genuine and actual work to be reflected in the way that people exhibit in expos. The idea is not to sort of use this as an opportunity in any other fashion. So we don’t want a controversy around exhibits which are presented here. I think it’s essential that a set code is followed there. Misinformation cannot be encouraged. We don’t want a controversy around this, around exhibits in the expo. I am not getting into whether they are right or wrong, we just don’t want a controversy,” he said. 

Asked whether the ministry had not checked how models were being developed, Krishnan said the exhibit was not for sale.  

“These are not things which are intended for sale, or where we have to standardise and certify. Certification happens if it is meant for public distribution or sale. When somebody is demonstrating a product, you presume that they know what they are talking about. If we have to certify even what has to be exhibited, then you’ll say we are stifling innovation. Our intention is not to stifle innovation,” he asserted.

University’s Apology

Blaming Singh for the fiasco, the university said she was “ill-informed” and was not authorised to speak to the media. 

“We at Galgotias University, wish to apologise profusely for the confusion created at the recent Al Summit. One of our representatives, manning the pavilion, was ill-informed. She was not aware of the technical origins of the product and in her enthusiasm of being on camera, gave factually incorrect information even though she was not authorised to speak to the press,” the institute said in a statement. 

The university insisted there was no intent to misrepresent the innovation and that it remains committed to “academic integrity, transparency, and responsible representation” of its work. 

It also confirmed that it had vacated the pavilion.

The new fund will build on the earlier Fund of Funds for Startups (FFS) launched in 2016. Under the first fund, Rs 10,000 crore was committed to 145 alternative investment funds, which together invested over Rs 25,000 crore in more than 1,300 startups across sectors.

FOF 2.0 will continue to invest in SEBI-registered alternative investment funds, which will in turn deploy capital into startups. The initiative aims to address funding gaps, especially in early-growth and technology-driven sectors.

 The new fund will focus on areas such as deep tech, manufacturing, and innovation-led businesses. It also aims to strengthen the domestic venture capital ecosystem and expand capital access beyond major metro cities.

As per the report, India currently has over 2 lakh recognised startups, compared to fewer than 500 in 2016 when the Startup India initiative was launched.
