NEW DELHI: Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday described the newly announced India-US trade agreement as a win-win deal that will significantly benefit citizens and industries in both countries.
Vaishnaw’s comments came shortly after Donald Trump held a conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, following which the US President announced that India and the United States had agreed on a trade pact aimed at lowering trade barriers and boosting bilateral commerce.
Tariff Reduction Brings Relief to Indian Exports
Under the agreement, the United States will reduce reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods to 18% from the current 25%, providing a major boost to Indian exporters. In return, India has agreed to move forward on reducing tariffs and non-tariff barriers for American goods, a move expected to deepen market access for US companies.
President Trump also said that India would purchase American goods, including energy products, worth over $500 billion, underlining the scale and ambition of the deal.
Leaders Call It a Brighter Future
In a post on X, Vaishnaw said the agreement would pave the way for stronger economic cooperation.
“India-US trade deal is a win-win deal. Citizens and industries of both countries will benefit greatly from this deal,” he said, adding that it would lead to a brighter future for both nations.
Calling India and the US the world’s largest democracies and natural allies, the minister noted that both countries have complementary strengths and can jointly create technologies and solutions that benefit the global economy.
PM Modi Welcomes Lower Tariffs on Made-in-India Goods
Prime Minister Modi welcomed the announcement, saying he was delighted that Made-in-India products would now face a reduced tariff of 18% in the US market.
“Wonderful to speak with my dear friend President Trump today. Delighted that Made in India products will now have a reduced tariff of 18%. Big thanks to President Trump on behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India,” Modi said.
The Prime Minister added that when two large economies and the world’s biggest democracies work together, it not only benefits their people but also unlocks immense opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation.
A Strategic Economic Partnership
The India-US trade deal is being seen as a significant step toward strengthening bilateral ties at a time of shifting global trade dynamics. With lower tariffs, expanded market access, and deeper cooperation in technology and energy, the agreement is expected to boost exports, attract investment, and reinforce the strategic partnership between New Delhi and Washington.
