ixigo Acquires 51% Stake in Train Food Delivery App Zoop

India’s leading travel tech firm, ixigo, is expanding its services by acquiring a 51% stake in Zoop Web Services Private Limited, an IRCTC-authorized train food delivery app. This strategic acquisition, valued at ₹12.54 crore, highlights ixigo’s commitment to enhancing the train travel experience by offering a wider range of dining options for passengers.

Strengthening Train Travel Services

With Zoop’s established presence across 192 railway stations and partnerships with 400 restaurants, ixigo is set to integrate Zoop’s food delivery capabilities with its own platform. This acquisition marks ixigo’s official entry into India’s rapidly growing e-catering industry, particularly catering to train travellers.

Deal Structure and Financials

The transaction, approved by ixigo’s board on October 24, 2024, involves both primary and secondary share purchases, as well as a non-compete fee. The acquisition will give ixigo control over Zoop’s operations, transforming it into a subsidiary of ixigo. Furthermore, ixigo retains an option to acquire the remaining 49% of Zoop’s shares in the future.

Enhancing the Train Travel Experience

One of the most notable outcomes of this acquisition is the launch of ixigo’s new “Food on Train” feature. This service allows passengers to pre-order meals from a variety of restaurants and have them delivered directly to their seats. Passengers can track their orders in real-time and cancel them up to a certain cutoff point, ensuring convenience and satisfaction.

This integration aims to address the limited food options available on trains, providing passengers with a seamless and diverse dining experience. By leveraging ixigo’s robust train scheduling data, the partnership minimizes missed deliveries and enhances overall customer satisfaction.

Strategic Growth in Train Travel Segment

The acquisition aligns with ixigo’s broader growth strategy, with the train travel segment contributing significantly to its overall revenue. By integrating food services into its platform, ixigo is poised to create a more comprehensive travel experience for its users, further solidifying its market position in India’s travel and e-catering sectors.

By acquiring Zoop, ixigo not only strengthens its foothold in the train travel market but also adds an important service to its growing list of offerings, making train journeys more comfortable and convenient for millions of passengers.
